Happy birthday!

Today is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In plain English, it's Mary's birthday.

Lots of Catholics have a soft spot for Mary, and lots of Catholic converts and reverts had a soft spot for her well before they came into the Church. I'm one of those. She has had her gentle guiding hand on my back all my life.

About (Long Version)

I'm in the throes of Ph.D. studies, an experience I'm loving and for which I'm deeply grateful. The downside is that other things I care about get pushed aside. This is my attempt to create space for those things, which include: education, photography, geeky things, amateur enthusiasm about science, shenanigans, adventures, occasional navel gazing, un-ironic enthusiasm about just about everything, and non-academic writing about all those.

Forced once in a bar to answer the question, "No, but really, on a scale of 1 to 10, how Catholic are you?", I said 10. If you're wondering what that even means, so am I. Anyway, that Catholicy stuff's everywhere.

This is a non-anonymous, search-engine-anti-optimized blog. It's not secret or private, so share away! I use first names, initials, or pseudonyms for myself, family and friends, and my institutions so this blog doesn't come up in searches about those people and things.
